Sports Medicine
Sports Medicine is a specialty that deals specifically with musculoskeletal
injury as a result of sports activity. We are responsible for evaluating,
treating, and rehabilitating these injuries regardless if sustained
by a world class athlete or a week-end warrior. These types of injuries
do not discriminate.
Depending on the severity of the injury, we may also refer to an orthopedic
surgeon for another opinion or as a follow-up after treatment. We often
work with patients before and after surgeries to ensure that they get
the most benefit and fastest recovery possible. It is our goal to return
you to your sport, job, or activity as quickly as possible and stronger
than you were prior to the injury or surgery.
Sports Medicine is also appropriate for those recovering from traumatic
work-related injuries even though a sport was not involved. We will
work the patient through three distinct phases of the rehabilitation
process. These phases are:
- Inflammatory phase: During this initial phase, when the injury
site is painful, swollen, and hot to the touch, we evaluate the injury
and
begin rehabilitation by prescribing gentle exercises to maintain
movement, minimize tissue damage, and diminish pain and swelling.
- Proliferation phase: Starts as the body begins to grow new
tissue to repair the injury site. This takes the form of a scar whether
on the skin, in a muscle or in a ligament. Rehabilitation at this
stage
is designed to gently mobilize the newly formed scar tissue so
that it grows to resemble and work like the tissue around it.
- Maturation phase: This is the final stage where we begin to build
strength and endurance into the newly healed injury so that it
is ready to return to sports activity. At this stage, rehabilitation
also addresses
other issues that might have developed during healing such as compensatory
movement, deficiencies in balance and proprioception, and decreased
coordination.
Our team of Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, Personal Trainers,
and Massage Therapists use various modalities, manual techniques, and
therapeutic exercise to achieve these goals.
